Who would have thought a catfish could be so stunning? Angler Martin Glatz from Duisburg, Germany, recently landed a spectacular fish called a "mandarin catfish" on October 4, 2021. At a lake in the Netherlands, Glatz caught the unique specimen while fishing with his twin brother. The German tackle company Angeldomäne sponsored Glatz, who was fishing with one of their prototype lures.

Glatz tells F&S that he expected a big pike at first. "It resembled a big 47-inch pike," he says. After seeing the color of the fish, I panicked slightly and yelled at my brother to get the net."

Glatz brought the fish to the boat, snapped a few pictures with it while admiring its vivid yellow coloring and released it. The fish is a wels catfish, a large species of catfish that is endemic to much of Europe. Despite their great size, wels catfish are generally grey or brown in color and look little like Glatz's catch. The condition, known as leucism, is a condition that causes loss of pigmentation in the skin. It can affect animals of almost any species.

Glatz is a particularly dedicated angler, because, even though luck surely plays a part whenever someone catches a fish like this one, he spends as many days on the water as possible and typically wets a line two or three times per week. “I learned to fish from my grandfather when I was 13 years old and have developed my abilities since. Fishing is in our family. My twin brother fishes, my wife fishes and I hope our sons will soon discover the hobby for themselves.”
